The increase in traffic generally over the past few years has led to
considerable congestion of roads, railways, shipping lanes and airspace.
Air Traffic Control in particular is of major concern as air transport
is increasing at a phenomenal rate and the safety implications are
critical. Time & Frequency Solutions have supplied timing and frequency
generation equipment for both civil and military ATC applications
throughout Europe and Asia and have been instrumental in the development
of the Trans-Atlantic ATC network. The GPS8, M210 and M211 instruments
are all ideally suited to ATC applications. Railway signalling systems also require precise time for synchronisation purposes, particularly in high capacity metro and mass transit systems during peak times. Time & Frequency Solutions have supplied a state-of-the-art turnkey synchronisation system for the Hong Kong mass transit system - the busiest system of its type in the world. We have also produced traffic control timing systems for road tolls, tunnels and shipping lanes. The M210 and M211 modular platforms are particularly suited for Master Clock applications in passenger information applications. A single master clock can drive a large number of both digital and analogue display clocks, together with providing time information to a variety of third party systems. Military applications and with recent emphasis on sophisticated secure
communications systems this importance has escalated. As suppliers of systems to the US DoD, the UK MOD and various other defence ministries and contractors world-wide, Time & Frequency Solutions have developed products and systems to support this market. The TFD8000, for instance, was developed primarily to supply the wide range of time, frequency and synchronisation signals required by military platforms, command and control centres and security listening services. Proven in service on board the US Navy's fleet of fast-attack submarines, the TFD8000 has been design and tested to rigorous military standards. With military budgets under constant scrutiny many new projects are calling for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions. Time & Frequency Solutions have developed a range of cost-effective products aimed to fill this need whilst retaining the accuracy and reliability expected of Mil-Spec. equipment. Time & Frequency Solutions have extensively supplied time and frequency
standards and instruments for all types of Utility applications
including Power Generation and Distribution, Water, Gas and Oil
industries together with schools, colleges, municipal offices and even
theatres. In many cases, the provision of accurate time is extremely
important to ensure that an audit trail is established for safety
information, together with precision time measurement for accurate
billing of the relevant commodity. Utility Management systems require time information in a variety of formats and Time & Frequency Solutions have worked with the major suppliers of SCADA and other Control Systems to ensure interface compatibility in this multi-vendor environment. The M210 and M211 products are particularly suited to this type of application due to their modular nature. Accordingly, these products are installed in Oil Rigs, Power Stations, Water Control Centres and other key sites. For electricity applications, there is even an optional module for the M210 and M211 for the precision monitoring of line frequency and line frequency time. Time & Frequency Solutions have also developed specific instruments for operation in the harsh EMC environment of Electricity Sub-stations. Over the past few years increasing demands have been put upon the
world's telecommunications networks. The growth in the number of both
fixed line and mobile telephone users, the expansion of the internet and
the need for increasingly high-speed data transmission have all raised
the stakes on the reliability of individual networks and their ability
to interface to one another. One area of considerable concern is network synchronisation and Time & Frequency Solutions have developed products specifically for Primary Reference Clock (PRC) and Stratum 2 and Stratum 3 tracking oscillator applications. The TFD8000 and GPS8 can both be configured to operate as a Primary Reference Clock and the TFD8000 has tracking oscillator module options. The M210 and M211 can both be configured to provide either T1 (1.544MHz) or E1 (2.048MHz) frequency reference outputs for SDH or SONET network synchronisation. The GPS8 has oscillator and output options designed expressly to meet mobile telephone network base station specifications while the M210 and M211 can both be configured as speaking clocks. |

scientific marketplaces from the provision of time in a broadcast studio
to the laboratory requirement for ultra precise time and frequency
comparisons using the Common View Measurement System. Accordingly, the
products offered by Time & Frequency Solutions vary from the simplest
analogue clock display to the most sophisticated instrument and within
that range, there is a product to fulfil every application. When logging large streams of scientific data, the ability to tag the data with an accurate time stamp is often a great benefit. However, in certain applications this ability is critical to the performance of the operation. For instance, when logging seismic shocks at various locations during an earthquake the ability to accurately record when a particular shock arrived at each location allows the operator to pinpoint the epicentre of the earthquake to within a few metres. This triangulation technique can similarly be employed for locating thunderstorm activity and vehicle tracking. Time & Frequency Solutions have developed interfaces specifically for this type of application and these are available on the M210, M211 and GPS8 products. The emergency services are under increasing pressure not just to respond promptly to calls for assistance but to be able to prove that they did so. A timed audit trail allows them to show, legally and unambiguously, the timing of a sequence of events from receiving the emergency call to completion of the operation. Time & Frequency Solutions have worked extensively with all of the major vendors of database systems, voice recorders, voice switches and displays to ensure complete interface compatibility, particularly on the highly flexible M210 and M211 platforms. Television and radio stations also need accurate sources of both time and frequency for studio and outside broadcast synchronisation, colour sub-carrier generation and as a transmitter reference. With the rapid increase in the use of computers and networks, a vast
array of new applications has appeared for timing, such as the
timestamping of financial transactions, safety information and other
critical data. Time & Frequency Solutions have developed a comprehensive
approach to computer synchronisation in order to meet the wide variety
of customer requirements. Network synchronisation can be achieved on Ethernet networks by means of Network Time Protocol (NTP). Through the use of the NTP8 Timeserver or by fitting an NTP Time Server module into a M210 or M211 Time System, time information is accurately and reliably communicated over the network. For the M210 or M211 Time System, there is also an optional module for synchronisation of an ATM network using Classic IP (CLIP) or LAN Emulation (LANE). Alternatively, when synchronising a small network of computers, all running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT, all that is needed is a single serial interface from either a GPS8, M210 or M211 to one of the computers in the network, together with the installation of Time & Frequency Solutions' "Synchroniser" software. A small array of computers can easily be synchronised without using a network by fitting a timing expansion card into each computer. Time & Frequency Solutions supply board level timing cards for ISA, PCI and VME-bus platforms, all of which have timecode inputs and outputs and include optional on-board GPS Receivers. In its simplest form a single computer can easily be synchronised to international or local time either with a serial interface from a GPS8, M210 or M211 or by fitting an internal timing expansion card with on-board GPS receiver. |
