Kinesia is a novel device for objectively quantifying motor symptoms of movement disorders such as Parkinsonīs disease and essential tremor. The compact device is worn on the finger and wrist of the patient and wirelessly transmits motion data to a nearby computer for display, analysis, report generation and storage. Kinesia can be used for patients with Parkinsonīs disease to monitor the severity of motor symptoms such as tremor and bradykinesia and track the fluctuation patterns of these symptoms over time. The Kinesia system provides a standardized platform which clinicians and movement disorder specialists can use in conjunction with standard evaluations to improve overall patient care.
Kinesia can be
used in any instance where monitoring upper
extremity Parkinsonīs disease and essential
tremor motor symptoms is desired. Potential
applications include monitoring kinematic motor
symptom responses to medication dose and time,
ambulatory tremor monitoring and tracking the
kinematics of tremor on/off time, movement
disorder motion analysis research and evaluating
novel treatment interventions such as deep brain
stimulation. The system can also be used in
pharmaceutical trials in which new drugs are
being evaluated to treat movement disorders.
Kinesia provides a repeatable standardized
platform in which the motor effects of drugs can
be consistently and objectively quantified.
